Data Visualization

First Visualization

As for the first visualization the designer wanted to create a visualization that shows the different aircraft that were used within the Vietnam War. The designer obtained the data from Kaggle. The data processing/ transformation was really simple. After the designer downloaded the data from Kaggle it was then imported into tableau. Next Xan the the selection of the chart / graph/ visualization type. This was a little challenging because the designer was a little unsure of what visualization type would help explain the data. That is why the designer decided to create one visualization but with three different visualization types. At the very top the viewer will see a bar  graph showing all of the different aircraft types and the number of missions it went on. The viewer will also notice that there is some layering and separation. The layering and separation would be the numbers on each bar to indicate to the viewer of how many missions that type of aircraft was on. The designer decided to keep the bar chart one color to make the numbers near them stand out. As for what is being represented in the middle of this visualization . This is a line chart. The designer wanted to present the data in a different way. So the designer used layering a separation as well as  different colors to help the viewer understand. There are three things that were incorporated into this line chart. The data that the researcher incorporated into the line chart includes, gloss id, mission, and aircraft type. The different colors represent all of the different aircraft that were used. As well as how many missions that specific aircraft types went on during the Vietnam War. Within this visualization color/ information and layering and separation is very important. The reason being is not only that the number of missions is presented to the viewer by the numbers above each color, but the different layering helps the viewer understand the data. If the viewer doesn’t understand what color is associated with the different aircraft that is presented, they can look  at the bottom of the visualization on the X axis. The visualization at the button is another bar graft. However, the designer wanted to incorporate more of the data and color as well. The color within the bar graft helps separate the aircraft's names.

Small multiples are important to incorporate within a visualization. The small multiples within this visualization would be how the two bar graphs and the line graph are presenting the data in a specific way but there is one thing different within each of them.  By designing small multiples in the visualization this is an excellent way of presenting the data to the viewer.

When designing both visualizations there were a couple issues that the designer encountered. The first one would be trying to understand the data and seeing which visualization type could the viewer understand the most. Trying to make the mix and match the data in tableau so the visualization is understandable. This was probably the most difficult part of the assignment. It is very important that both of the visualizations make sense for the viewer so deciding where to put what within tableau was very challenging.  The second issue was that first there were so many datasets that were downloaded and imported into tableau by the designer because the designer was unsure on what topic should be chosen for this assignment.

Third Visualization

The third visualization that was created is college football stats from 2013 - 2020. The data processing and transformation was very simple. The researcher downloaded the data from kaggle and imported the data into tableau.  The visualization can show the view of a bar chart as well as a pie chart. The bar chart is on the button and the pie chart is on top. The reason why the pie chart and bar chart are combined into one visualization is because the researcher separated the data and displayed some in the pie chart and other data into the bar chart. The bar chart will show the viewer what was the average time of possession per game for each college as well as first down each team had. As for the pie chart this will display multiple things to the viewer. They include all of the different teams, the average time that they had possession per game, kickoff returns rank, loss, and redzone points allowed. All of this that is displayed within the pie chart is very important in understanding the data as a viewer. The selection of visualizations and graph type are very important when designing a visualization. The reason being is it helps the researcher separate the data in a specific way that can then be presented to the viewer in a particular way for them to understand.  As for the layering and separation. This section can overlap with the color and information section. The reason being is that the layering and separation that the design chose to incorporate was two separate visualization types. One is the pie chart and the other is the bar chart. The researcher used two different visualization types to separate the data so the viewer could understand it more easily. The researcher also incorporated different colors within the bar chart to separate the different college teams to make the data more clear. The different colors on the bar chart also helps separate the stats that each team had. Layering and separation is very important when designing a visualization. However, in this visualization there is no layering but there is separation. As for incorporating small multiples for the viewer within the visualization. Small multiple deals with similar pictures within the visualization. However, within this visualization there are little to non small multiples. A small multiple within this visualization would be how there are bars within the bar chart as well as multiple circles within the pie chart. However, each circle or bar represents something different.

As for space and time the research implemented a little of this within the visualization. The viewer can see the different time that the difference had. They can view this by looking at the X and Y axis. Overall, this visualization is a well rounded design of taking data and presenting it to the viewer to understand the statistics that each college football team had within a specific year.

Overall, both of the visualizations that were created are great ways of presenting the data to the viewer. The data of college stats from 2013 - 2020 and the one that presents the different types of aircraft that were used in the Vietnam War use all of the different types of Tufte's Theories as well as following Tuftes design rules.
